Tim Clark Bikes_518x600
When last did you see a motorbike complete with sidecar? They really are something out of the history books – unless you are Tim Clark, recently in Smithfield with a trailer load of his products.

The product? Pre-war German-designed sidecars now made exclusively for the Chinese Army. And they end up in South Africa, helping to boost our tourism!

Mr Clarke (left in photo) runs a Cape-based business which rents out these hangovers from the past. For anyone keen to add a touch of adventure to a tour of our more scenic parts, this could be your cup of tea.

The sidecars are all more than 30 years old and to complete the picture, the motorbikes providing the locomotion, are all powered by the famous BMW “Flathead” engine designed in 1938. Apparently all BMWs
designs ended up in China after the war and became a fixture in that country’s army.

The moral of the story is that there is business potential in anything, if you have the flair to develop it.
